CAROLINAS – The Carolinas Geographic Rugby Union has set the dates and locations for their two tryout camps being held this Fall. The camps serve as the on the pitch kickoff for the CGRU High Performance Program which was launched after the union’s AGM this September. The tryout camps are scheduled for two separate locations on two separate days to allow better coverage from administrators and coaches. It also allows for two separate opportunities for Women’s players to make a camp.
From the tryout camps, the CGRU will select two men’s teams (North Carolina and South Carolina) and one CGRU Women’s Select Side. The teams are scheduled to compete at the Southern Classic Tournament on December 3rd in Charleston, SC. From that tournament, the program will whittle down their men into one CGRU Men’s Select Side. The Men and Women’s Selects will participate in tournaments and matches during openings in the Spring window. The Select’s first event will be playing in the Elite Division at the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Tournament in March 2017.
“We were under a time crunch this Fall to put the program together,” said CGRU President Simone Bontly. “We (the CGRU board) felt it was important to get something rolling this Fall as opposed to waiting until next year to launch.”
Last week, the CGRU also named the new High Performance Program Directors that will help shape and guide the new program for the union. The Directors will be working with USA Rugby to install the same standards that are being used in other High Performance environments around the country. With a large task ahead, the union decided to split the HP Director role into two positions, Men and Women’s Directors. The two Director’s will work hand in hand to produce a program in which the union members can take pride.
Brad Richard has been named as the Women’s High Performance Director while Ted Hardy has been named in the Men’s Director role.
With the Directors named, the HPP is now in search of coaches and team managers to help with the new squads. Coaches and Managers will report to the HP Directors and work alongside them to ensure that standards are put in place and players are progressing. All CGRU coaches are encouraged to get involved in the HPP as part of the program is to also increase the level of knowledge and development for coaches across the Carolinas. Any interested coach and/or manager should contact the CGRU with a letter of interest.
