The Charlotte Rugby Football Club returned from the South Championships with not one, but two South titles. For the first time in club history, both the Men and Women’s teams hoisted championships. The two sides now move onto the USA Rugby National Quarterfinals in Pittsburgh, PA. The next round of the national tournament takes place May 21-22 at Founders Field.

Charlotte’s men reached the USA D2 Quarterfinals with two wins in Montgomery. They opened with a 30-11 victory over Nashville and then held on for a nail biting 34-33 win over the Miami Tridents. As the #1 seed from the South, Charlotte takes on the Midwest champions which is going to be the winner of the Detroit Tradesmen and South Side Irish.

The Women from Charlotte had less drama in claiming the South title. Charlotte pounded through both of their opponents, outscoring them 92-7 over the weekend. Charlotte opened up with a 49-0 thumping for Fort Miami and followed that with a convincing 43-7 win over the Nashville Stone Lions. With the South #1 seed, Charlotte is scheduled to face the Midwest #1 seed. The Midwest qualifier has yet to take place, so their opponent is yet to be determined.

Stay tuned to the new CGU website as we follow Charlotte’s progress through the playoffs.
